HOUSE OF FAKE: building information protection in the media space

19.05.2023

Greetings, dear friends!

This year, the House of Fakes is opening its doors to those who want to understand the chronology of lies. However, we are not saying goodbye, but taking a short time out to create a new timetable for you, which is the one used by Russian propaganda. The last event took place on 17-18 May 2023.

Information fakes are the narrative base of the aggressor. He lobbies sophisticatedly for disinformation on all possible information platforms to destroy the ability of Ukrainians to think critically.

To raise media literacy and awareness online, the Academy of Ukrainian Press, with the support of the Media Programme in Ukraine, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by Internews, held a series of online trainings. All of them concerned the work of the aggressor's propaganda machine, its manipulations, IPSO, the effects of artificial intelligence, the dangers of telegram channels and interaction with Western media in their work.

Russian propaganda is particularly cynical about the latter point, constantly looking for new ways and approaches to influence Ukrainian and European audiences. Their actions were aimed at legalizing critical narratives through individual journalists and bloggers.

"Despite the fact that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, several countries have banned propaganda resources from their airwaves, a parallel network of small media and biased experts continues to operate.

Kremlin propagandists legitimize their narratives and messages through these networks, through statements and publications by so-called "Western experts" that justify aggression," said Oleksandr Horokhovsky, head of the fact-checking project BezBrekhni.

Over the past 15 months, Ukrainians have been subjected to much information fallout. Sometimes it seems that it is simply impossible to classify these hostile inputs.

However, Serhiy Shturhetskyi, head of the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine, is convinced that thanks to the inquisitive and active audience of the webinars, we managed to examine the "anatomy" of rumours and thoroughly analyze examples of fakes: "False reports have caused a lot of trouble for Ukrainians. Now, armed with the knowledge and methodology, the participants of the online events will be able to share their experience with others."

During the series of two-day trainings "House of Fakes: Lies on Schedule (Chronology of Russian Information Throwdowns)", our participants already know about propaganda techniques and methods of manipulation. We helped 185 participants systematize these algorithms. The promotion of our work will help protect journalism students from information traps in the future.

The online training was part of a joint project between AUP and Internews, an international organization that implements the Media Program in Ukraine with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This programme strengthens Ukrainian media and increases access to quality information.
