Ukrainians, Belarusians and Poles exchanged media education experience in Sweden

In May, 15-20, 2016, the Third Media Literacy Summer Camp was organized by media institute FOJO in Kalmar (Sweden). 25 media teachers from Ukraaine, Belarus and Poland became its participants.  

Over a 5-day period the participants were learning media literacy teaching experience and resources for media trainers in Sweden. They discussed the development of media sector in digital age and how media education is relevant to this process. Media education implementing coordinators from Ukraine were, in particular, the representatives of the Academy of Ukrainian Press and other experts from the regions. Viktoria Pishchanska (Dnipropetrovsk region), Olena Burim (Luhansk region), Halyna Dehtyariova (Kharkiv region) introduced the experimental activity models. Oleksand Mokrohuz, Chairman at Social Disciplines and Teaching Methodology Department, D. Ushynskyi Chernihiv Regional Institute for Continuing Teachers’ Training, told about the progress of Ukrainian media education in 2015/2016. Oksana Voloshenyuk, media education program manager, AUP and Yulia Huza, editor of ‘Media education and media literacy’ web-portal, AUP informed about the activity of the Academy of Ukrainian Press, ‘Practical media literacy for citizens’ program (organized in cooperation with IREX), where more than 15 000 persons participated in trainings. Rayisa Yevtushenko, Chief Expert at the Secondary and Pre-School Education Department, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine together with co-authors Tamara Bakka, Associate Professor at the Department of the Social Disciplines Teaching Methodology and Gender Education, the Institute of Historic Education, Drahomanov National Teachers’ Training University and Oleksandr Mokrohuz held a master class –a model of media education lesson from their handbook for teachers ‘Media literacy at the social science lessons’.

Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian School Association Tamara Mackiewicz said: "If the XX century was the century of fighting for access to information and freedom of speech, the XXI century was the misuse of information. And those who had been prohibiting the freedom of speech before, quickly switched to using media manipulation: overall spread of disinformation, propaganda, use of advertisements, hidden pseudo-scientific or social issues ... In the XXI century media are used for organizing revolutions and wars. The number of entire countries like, for example, Ukraine and Belarus became objects of information wars led in their media environment by those countries, the power of which does not share democratic values. And there is only one way out for all of us - public media education.

The participants of Summer Camp are going to prepare a series of publications which will be available on the portal ‘Media education and media literacy’.
