VIDEO BLOGGING AND STANDARDS: SECRETS OF PROFESSIONALISM

23.08.2019

On August 1-2, the Academy of Ukrainain Press in cooperation with Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom organized the workshop in Poltava “Video blogging: between populism and journalism standards. Creation of unique content”. The aspects and trends of this modern activity were discussed by experts Valeriy Ivanov, Andrii Yurychko, and Zhanna Kuznetsova.

Valeriy Ivanov, President of the Academy of Ukrainian Press told about the basic difference between the online network communication, where bloggers work, and stable media environment. The expert pointed out: ‘Following the standards of  journalism is obligatory for a journalist, and a blogger might be even ignoring them. Consequently, a journalist is an expert, as a rule, and a blogger is not necessarily. However, video blogging is getting more popular, especially among youth. A lot of children dream to become video bloggers'. Therefore, following the standards of journalism for the bloggers is not less significant than for the journalists.

Andrii Yurychko, media coach, lecturer at the Institute of Journalism, T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University, mentioned that a blogger is not so limited in spreading information as a journalism who always depends of professional standards. ‘A blogger can afford getting philosophical, giving feedback on various issues, speaking clearly or verbosely. A blogger can completely neglect the ethical norms by his outlook, manners and slang. The most important thing for a blogger is to be echoed among the target audience.  The more blogger’s views correspond to the subscribers’ values and mindset, the more views he/she has: popularity is increasing! That is why, ethic standards and culture are secondary while making a unique product. Blog ambiquity and new approaches is what the audience requires,’ emphasized the expert.

‘Following the standards of journalism is extremely important for a blogger’s activity.  This is due to coverage not just daily routine but social, political, economic, public, religious and other socially important processes in blogs,’  said Zhanna Kuznietsova, media coach, mentor, film director and producer. The expert focused on using blogs as the tools for impact on one’s consciousness not only by private bloggers but even by the governments. She paid attention to the importance of critical thinking development among all segments of the population: “Video blogging is a higly attractive field of activity. One may create individual media environment, unique content and unlimited freedom of self-expression,” added the coach.

Large-scaled three-year joint project of the Academy of Ukrainian Press and Friedrich Naumann  Foundation for Freedom (with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany) is aimed at re-raining of Ukrainian journalists.
