The world will never forget the word "Bucha". It will remain in history as a symbol of crimes committed by the aggressor. It will be an example of atrocities committed by the Russian army against the Ukrainian people.
The world will never forget it thanks to the documentation, information, and timely coverage provided by journalists.
Staying in hot spots is a risk for media professionals. Gathering information from there is absolute roulette. Russian roulette. Which for the pursuit of truth can take lives.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 43 journalists have been killed. The respect project "Carriers of Memory. Fallen Journalists - 2022" is an event in memory of professionals who defended the information front of Ukraine. It has already been presented in four cities. And on the eve of the New Year holidays, on December 23, the presentation was held in Rivne.
Yulia Kulyk, the author of the memorial and project coordinator of the Academy of Ukrainian Press, noted: "The profession of journalism in war is a risk driven by the inability to stay away from injustice and the desire to be the voice of the voiceless and give a face to the faceless. For the fact that the media heroes each in their own way tried to stop the murderous spiral, their press card will be forever in our memory".
"In addition to a serious discussion about the security challenges journalists are facing, today in Rivne in the professional circle of journalists there were also proposals for social protection and insurance of journalists and opinions on the need to retrain specialists to meet the needs of the market (highly compressed due to the war), - said media trainer, journalist, lecturer at the National University of Ostroh Academy, head of the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine Serhiy Shturhetsky, - I think that such meetings contribute not only to a new understanding of the profession of a journalist but also to the search for new ways to overcome the grave consequences of the Russian aggression".
