THE AUP MEMORIAL PRESENTED IN THE PARLIAMENT OF UKRAINE

31.05.2023

Soon, 6 June will be Journalist's Day, a professional holiday for Ukrainian media workers. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, journalists have become the primary recorders of war crimes. Staying in the hot spots, they document Ukrainian tragedies so that the whole world can see the horrors committed by the aggressor.

Journalists are being killed, hunted down, and murdered. ULA, with the support of its partners, created the project "Carriers of Memory. Fallen Journalists - 2022", which tells the biographies of media professionals who became victims of the military offensive. Its goal is to pay tribute and express gratitude to those who protected Ukrainians from the enemy with the power of words.

This is the first physical 17-metre-high Memorial in Ukraine. It is located on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and will be there for two weeks. We are grateful to the representatives of the Office for their attention and support of the project.

The profession of a journalist in war is a risk driven by the inability to stand aside from injustice and the desire to be the voice of the voiceless and give a face to the faceless. Because the media heroes tried to stop the murderous spiral in their way, their names will always be remembered in our memory.

The Academy of Ukrainian Press (AUP) implemented the project with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the German Foreign Office and Civil Society Cooperation, in partnership with the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine. The author is Yulia Kulyk, the AUP project coordinator.

The memorial contains 21 stories in two languages: Ukrainian and English, and was presented in four cities of Ukraine: Cherkasy, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Rivne.
